New Feature: Team Challenges

Today we're excited to announce a new feature: team challenges!

Starting today, when you create a new challenge, you can elect to make it a team challenge. With this type of challenge, groups of riders can compete together against other teams.

With team challenges, the leaderboard is sorted by team score rather than individual score. A team score is calculated as the sum of all team member's chosen metric (calories, output, etc) for all eligible rides during the challenge, divided by the number of team members.

For example, say a challenge has 2 teams, and each team has 3 riders, and the metric of choice is Output. Team 1 has the following rides for each member:

  1. 100KJ, 125KJ, 25KJ
  2. 150KJ, 100KJ
  3. 200KJ, 175KJ

The leaderboard score for Team 1 would be the sum of the output for all rides (100 + 125 + 25 + 150 + 100 + 200 + 175) divided by the number of team members (3), which equals 291.

Like, if Team 2 has the following rides for each member:

  1. 150KJ
  2. 75KJ, 90KJ, 100KJ
  3. 300KJ, 250KJ

The leaderboard score for Team 2 would be the sum of the output for all rides (150 + 75 +90 +100 + 300 +250) divided by the number of team members (3), which equals 321.

Like individual challenges, the leaderboard scores are updated throughout the day and always reflect the latest set of rides that are eligible for each member of the team.

There are a few things to keep in mind when competing in a team challenge:

  • Once a team challenge is created, it cannot be changed to an individual challenge. Likewise, an Individual challenge cannot be changed to a team challenge.
  • Editing all other aspects of a team challenge is possible up until the start date. Like individual challenges, team challenges become "locked" after the start date.
  • Only managers can add or remove teams. There is no limit on the number of teams that can be created, nor how many riders can join a team.
  • Riders and join and leave a team just like the would an individual challenge. A rider can only be on one team.
  • A rider who has joined a team but not completed any rides will not factor into the leaderboard score until an eligible ride has been completed.

This feature is still in beta and we expect there may be some minor tweaks or updates as people try it out. As always, we'd love to hear any feedback or suggestions you may have. Happy riding and see you on the leaderboard!
